Entomophobia ? Help for Entomophobia

What is Entomophobia ?

Entomophobia- Fear of insects.

Symptoms of Entomophobia

There has been considerable debate about the role of the emotional responses of disgust or revulsion in the acquisition and maintenance of animal phobias. This has been studied in relation to insect phobia but while some experts have produced results which indicate that disgust is relevant, others believe that it is not. It is interesting to note that anecdotal evidence suggests that many people who are not truly phobic dislike insects, find them repulsive and have difficulty handling them without the aid of a glove or a piece of kitchen paper.

People frequently perceive spiders to be ugly compared to, for example, butterflies which are more likely to be considered colourful and beautiful (although butterflies can also be the subject of phobias). This might suggest that emotional responses to spiders are relevant for some phobics, even if they are not the main factor at work in the phobia.

Treatment of Entomophobia

As noted in the general discussion, about animal phobias, the most important features maintaining the of a insect phobic are his mistaken beliefs (cognitive factors) which interact and reinforce one another. These concern his beliefs about how a spider behaves, the harm or damage he will sustain if he is confronted with the animal and whether he will be able to cope or to escape. The person may fear that he will lose physical and mental control, become hysterical, have a panic attack or experience so great a level of anxiety that it will cause a heart attack from which he may die.
