Earlier studies of phobias assumed that they were all acquired at an unconscious level and were completely unaffected by individual beliefs, thoughts, emotions or assumptions. The latter, which have come to be known as 'cognitive factors', are now recognised to be enormously important in the maintenance of phobic fears and almost certainly contribute to their development as well.
